Rick Vito – Crying at Midnight

Lyrics: Crying at Midnight

Rick Vito, the legendary guitarist and singer, has delivered a masterpiece with his latest album ‘Cadillac Man’ that encompasses all facets of his musical genius. The album is a rich and varied collection of songs that testify to Vito’s unparalleled talent as a songwriter, guitarist and performer. The album cover is a photo of Rick’s 1969 Sedan De Ville, which he named Mr. Lucky mentioned, and is anchored with that license plate.

Vito is probably best known for his role in the legendary supergroup Fleetwood Mac from 1987-1991, when he revived the blues feel of the band’s early years. In 2008 he joined Mick Fleetwood to form the Mick Fleetwood Blues Band and was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Traditional Blues category in 2010, both as a recording artist and producer for the album ‘Blue Again’.

Vito opens with the infectious shuffle Love Crazy Baby and lets his guitar do the talking for the first few choruses before singing about his girl, punctuating each verse with a biting guitar before launching into a killer solo, setting off the start of many more more. After the well-known It’s Two A.M., a song that Rick composed for Shemekia Copeland in 2001, Vito pays tribute to the car in the rocking, pounding title track. Cadillac Man is an explosion of rock ‘n’ roll, as he previously said: “They call me Mr. Lucky, I’m a Cadillac Man.”

The tone shifts slightly for Little Sheba as Vito paints a portrait of a woman with many mysteries, laying his vocals low on the choruses and delivering haunting slide guitar lines enhanced by Steve Mariner’s equally haunting harmonica. The flowing instrumental Bo In Paradise follows with its own haunting melody. Gone Like A Cool Breeze swings like crazy while Vito stokes the fire with a funky, addictive and heavy beat. Complete with distinct sax, a pounding rhythm and more (including some neat, crisply rendered lead guitar riffs), his lead vocals fit like a pair of old shoes.

A beautiful blues ballad of a lost love Crying at Midnight, where the guitar crushes the sad emotion. Vito’s singing is straightforward but lacks the emotional qualities that many blues singers have. But his guitar playing more than compensates. Barbeque’n Baby has a wonderful swinging Memphis beat; the kind that’s sure to make your feet itch to dance. Vito makes everything sound so simple as a player, singer and writer. The only cover on the album is Vito’s absolutely beautiful instrumental interpretation of the gospel song Just Another Day by Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers.

Then, in the spirit of a true blues guitarist, he lets loose with solos on You Can’t Stop A Guitar (From Playing the Blues), a precursor to the closing instrumental Sliding Into The Blues where he gives a nod to Fleetwood Mac’s all-time classic times, Albatross (1968), written by the late Peter Green.

Overall, ‘Cadillac Man’ is a stunning achievement from an artist who has mastered his craft to perfection. With his eclectic mix of styles and his undeniable passion for music, Rick Vito once again proves why he is one of the most respected figures in today’s music scene. This album is an absolute must-have for lovers of authentic and timeless music.
