Why extend songs at all? I believe songs that are less than three minutes are too short. They seem like they are over as soon as they start. Apple itself will only preview a song longer than thirty seconds if it is at least two and a half minutes or longer. The sweet spot for me are songs that are around three and a half minutes long. Conversely if songs are longer than four minutes, they tend to seem like they drag on. In some cases I will abridge a song to make it shorter in duration.
